Sun Damage

Ultraviolet light from the sun or from tanning booths liberates free radicals in the body, leading to damage in skin cells’ DNA. Skin cells affected by ultraviolet light initially produce a tanned look to skin but eventually results in brown spots. Over exposure can cause premature aging in the form of wrinkles, loss of skin’s elasticity, brown “liver spots” or “age spots,” as well as some types of cancer.

We have many options for improving your skin’s appearance despite sun damage. One such treatment is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy that utilizes a light source to target damaged areas while not harming surrounding healthy skin. Biopsies of treated areas have shown reversal of scarring, inflammation, broken capillaries and pigmentation associated with sun damage. Skin damaged by the sun typically requires multiple treatment sessions, but results can be quite impressive.

We often combine various treatment options to customize a program for each individual’s needs. Combining multiple approaches is typically more effective than using a single method on its own and the various treatments are either relatively or completely painless and require little if any downtime.
